Take a trip to the historical town of Portobelo, which Christopher Columbus named during his fourth journey to the Americas in 1502 while exploring this area. Although it is currently a small fishing village, Portobelo was once among Spain’s wealthiest ports from the 16th to the 18th century. This made it a clear target for pirates, who launched numerous attacks on the city despite the Spanish constructing several forts in the region for its protection. Those forts, now in ruins, were designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1980.
Upon arrival, you will embark on a 15-minute boat journey to La Huerta Beach or a comparable destination, where you can spend the remainder of the morning amidst coconut trees, vibrant tropical flora and fauna, and crystal-clear waters. Before returning to the city, a lunch will be enjoyed at Portobelo Bay.
